South Bend is moving beyond its industrial legacy to a high-tech, high-paying future, and Mayor Luecke's policies and leadership have been instrumental. Luecke has supported smart growth that expands South Bend without diminishing its neighborhoods, environment or the community as a whole.
Advancing a progressive economy – high-tech, high-wage, high growth: From the Eddy Street Commons (the area’s single largest development in decades) to the long-term investment of more than one-half billion dollars in Blackthorn, Luecke is bringing good jobs and industries to South Bend. Luecke’s leadership made South Bend the first U.S. city to put dark fiber-optic lines in its traffic conduit, creating the St. Joseph Valley Metronet. The Metronet, and Luecke’s work with Notre Dame to create a certified technology park, is making South Bend a high-tech hub.
Creating a culture of community – vibrant, safe, engaging: Crime is down 24 percent since Luecke became mayor in 1997 and quality of life is way up. From investments that created a downtown renaissance and fostered arts and entertainment to a network of bicycle lanes, paths and riverwalks, South Bend is built on more than bricks and mortar. The selection of South Bend’s west side for a $40 million world-class youth and family center confirms that Luecke’s leadership seeks to expand the potential of its people.
Reforming city government – lean, clean and green: South Bend’s services have expanded even as the city works with 80 fewer employees. The Luecke administration has saved millions through technological efficiencies, fiscal responsibility and smart planning that built community consensus for City Plan, South Bend’s most comprehensive plan ever.
